The KV-2 754(r) was not a separate tank model but a designation used by Germany for captured Soviet KV-2 heavy tanks during World War II. The KV-2 itself was developed by the Soviet Union in 1939–1940 as a variant of the KV-1, designed to destroy fortified positions during assaults. It was recognizable by its massive, box-shaped turret and its powerful 152 mm M-10 howitzer. When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa in 1941, several KV-2 tanks were captured intact or repaired after being abandoned. The Germans re-designated these vehicles Panzerkampfwagen KV-2 754(r), with “(r)” meaning russisch (Russian). Although extremely well armored for the time, the KV-2 had serious drawbacks: it was slow, mechanically unreliable, and its tall turret made it an easy target. Germany used captured KV-2 tanks in limited roles such as training, security duties, or occasionally frontline combat, but they were never widely deployed because spare parts and ammunition were difficult to obtain.
