The Crusader Mk III was a British cruiser-tank that entered production in mid-1942 and served through the North Africa campaign. It was developed to address the major limitation of earlier Crusader marks; most notably under-powered armament, by installing the more capable QF 57 mm gun in the Mk III model. Weighing about 44,000 lbs. and carrying a crew of three (commander, gunner, driver) the vehicle’s armor ranged from roughly 32 mm on the angled front hull to lighter thickness on other faces. Its speed was impressive for its day — about 25MPH on road, cross-country less so. In service, the Mk III first saw combat during the Second Battle of El Alamein in late 1942. While its firepower was much improved over previous Crusaders, its armor remained light relative to German AFVs, and it continued to suffer from reliability and overheating issues, especially in desert conditions. Multiple variants included anti-aircraft versions (Crusader III AA) mounting twin 20 mm Oerlikons or Bofors guns, which were used later in the war. Realistic Christie Suspension This system used large road wheels with long-travel coil spring suspension, giving the tank good speed and mobility across rough terrain compared to earlier British tanks.
