The U.S. M113A1 ACAV (Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle) was a key evolution of the M113 series, developed during the Vietnam War to improve survivability and firepower for armored cavalry units. Based on the aluminum-hulled M113A1, the ACAV introduced a distinctive weapons configuration: a centrally mounted M2HB .50-cal machine gun enclosed by an armored gun shield, supported by two M60 machine guns on pintle mounts with protective side shields for the flank gunners. These additions transformed the vehicle from a basic armored personnel carrier into a mobile fire-support platform capable of providing 360-degree suppression. Powered by the 6V53 Detroit Diesel, the M113A1 ACAV maintained high mobility in dense jungle terrain and could keep pace with cavalry operations requiring rapid deployment.
