I only needed the strut without the trailing link and wheel and axle. Just the strut is available for other planes, so why not this one Freewing? The cost is reasonable for what you get but I don't need all the 'what you get' parts. So some of my money is wasted. It would be nice if MRC would point us to a "strut only" part from another plane we could use, if there was one, but from my research, I haven't found one. The problem is that over time, landing on grass, no matter how smooth, results in some play in that long strut just running over deer tracks. Eventually the hole in the top becomes rounded and the strut starts moving back from vertical. If left that way, it will eventually break off where it meets the trunnion. Just give us the part we need, the STRUT.

The unit, including the shock absorbing pieces, is 137.5mm long from the top of the strut to the axle center. The strut is 10mm in diameter and 89mm long. The top of the strut receives the 4.1mm connecting pin from the retract unit. The tire measures 16x50mm. These dimensions are not included in the item description so I have added them here. I am also including the dimensions for anyone seeking a strut only replacement used in another model. Maybe MRC can recommend one? The unit is well made and solid. There is no sideways play in the axle or wheel. The oleo spring is completely enclosed within the strut so not likely to accumulate debris. The 4 screws holding the bottom keeper ring and the trailing link assembly, are the same size. The only complaint I have is that the separate parts are not available to be purchased. Since there is no option to rate the strut itself, I downrated the value of the product for the money, hoping Freewing will get the message that we need to be able to buy the most likely part needing replacement, i.e. the strut. The top of the strut that enters the connecting pin is the most likely part to deform if there is a bad landing or transport accident, i.e. dropping the bird. But the strut cannot be bought separately as they are available with most other Freewing landing gear sets. The top of my strut was deformed badly enough that I could not remove one of the 2 grub screws holding it in place (front and rear). The entire strut and wheel assembly was torn from the retract unit, deforming the top hole and crushing the grub screw in place. The rear grub screw seats in the flat spot of the connecting pin. The upper flat spot of the connecting pin is held in place with the steering piece at the rear of the part also. Overall a very well made unit. Just make the parts available as well.
