Overview
B222 Mercy Air Medic 800 Size Scale Helicopter ARF (Almost Ready to Fly) from Roban - RBN-B222-MF
The B222 was the first light commercial twin turbine engine helicopter developed in the United States. Developed as a larger follow on to the popular Model 206, the Model 222 incorporated a variety of state of the art technologies for its time. This included vibration reduction systems, provisions for IFR avionics, and dual hydraulic and electrical systems. The aircraft also had the option to be configured either with skids or retractable landing gear depending on the needs of the user. The 222 is primarily used for corporate transport and emergency medical or utility transport missions, with seating for up to 10 including the pilot. In popular culture, a modified 222 also starred in the Airwolf TV series as a fictional sleek and powerful attack helicopter.
This is the Roban B222 Mercy Air Medic Scale 800 ARF. A premium scale kit that offers unparalleled detail. From tip-to-tail the B222 body kit displays an accuracy of detail to the real aircraft not normally seen in the RC helicopter hobby.
This kit comes with a fully illuminated scale detail cockpit with illuminated dashboard, joysticks, rudder pedals, aerials, windshield wipers and more. Full rear cabin interiors are included (not installed). Floor and ceiling details can be crafted so once the interiors are installed you have an impressively scaled cockpit/interior.
These scale kits house the cockpit in precisely the right location and the mechanics are built into the engine compartment just like in the full scale version. The B222 really impresses with the highly detailed and accurately scaled down profile.

Roban Scale Helicopters are intended for modelers who have advanced level building skills. Both ARF and KIT product formats require you to install your own electronics (ESC, servos, motor, etc). KIT product formats also require you to install your own helicopter mechanics. Because helicopter mechanics can vary greatly in size and shape, you may be required to modify the fuselage slightly (including cutting, drilling, etc.) to achieve a perfect fit. Roban fuselages are all handmade from fiberglass and therefore may have slight variation in tolerances between body panels, doors, or windows. These variations do not affect flight performance and can be easily adjusted by an experienced builder with proper tools. These precautions are intended for novice builders; an experienced modeler should have no issue achieving perfect results with these premiere scale helicopters kits.

The only parts available are over seas and extremely expensive. Roban is absolutely no help at all. I’ve sent 3 emails with no response. You would think for as much money as these heli’s cost they would have customer support. Better hope you don’t need parts. Only 2 stars because of Roban customer service. Motions customer service 5 stars.

Overall, the aircraft flies very well. I’m currently governed to 80% to keep good tail authority. It is quite stable and well behaved even in gusty winds. With the low tail clearance, a slight rolling takeoff and landing are recommended if possible. Attached are a few photos from my last few flights. Components in the build were: Motor: Align 800MX 520KV ESC: HobbyWing 130HV Servos: Xpert R2 FBL: Ikon2 BT Here’s a list of the mods, issues, and changes that I’ve run into. 1. Retracts - The stock arrangements work fine, but are a bit complex. Be very precise on the setup! The bellcrank should not be imparting any torque to the retract on-ground. That load should be going through the wood stops that contact the struts. I would also recommend reinforcing the wooden tray that hold the main retract units. In its stock configuration it cracks fairly easily. I added a small 1/4” plywood doubler over the perimeter of the retract box where it meets the tray. One major thing to note is that the retracts are sized only for taking load while moving forwards. This means you need to be careful when pushing the model backwards, e.i. Loading it in the car. I’ve popped a few bellcranks and set screws pushing it in the car with a bit too much force. 2. Tail Rotor Direction - this was not scale for a 222 in the stock configuration. In addition, it can also be less efficient and have slightly less control power. I elected to change this so that the inboard blade rotates up into the rotor wash. This was done fairly easily by relocating the upper tail rotor bevel gear to the lower side of the shaft. I also pinned the torque tube to prevent this from unscrewing the threaded ends. 3. Light controller - the Roban light controller gave me a bit of trouble at first. Initially, I had it on a Y harness with the BEC input and the flashing pattern seemed to change with every boot. I relocated it to the bind plug and it’s worked fine ever since. 4. Paint - the paint quality is good, but one of the critical paint lines is off in position. Normally, this wouldn’t be a huge issue, but it would cut straight through the large MERCY AIR decal that goes on the sides of the aircraft. I’m still trying to figure out what I’ll do there. Minor gripe, but the tail number is also incorrect. The included numbers correspond with a skid gear 222. N408MA or N406MA would be more correct. I also repainted the rotor blades from the stock black, to a high vis orange/white scheme.

The retracts work well but takes a bit of work to make them perfect. I have built many Roban models and I only give a hit because of their manuals. Just awful. But as stated this is a advanced kit and you should have some experience building scale helicopters before you try this one. The paint lines and scale detail are very good for the price of the kit. You truly get alot for your money with these kits. I'm so happy Motion has taken over the Roban line. Now I know I need never worry about customer service again.
